Jury Panel Meets to Determine Artists
for the 2013 Festival
The Sausalito Art Festival Jury Looks for Quality, Variety and the “It” Factor

In March, a volunteer jury of artists convened for two days to review applications from artists from all over country who want to part of the exclusive group of artists to exhibit at the Sausalito Art Festival. The process is efficient and rigorous. A different set of professional artist-jurors is elected every year by all exhibiting artists from the previous year, to ensure that the pool is respected, varied, dedicated and professional.
The team of 14 jurors for the 2013 Festival was made up of one expert in each of the Festival’s 14 artistic categories—from painting, jewelry and glass to 3D, wood and fiber arts among others. The process is completely “blind”: artists submit photos of work as well as a photo of their works exhibited in a booth, with no names attached. This anonymous judging process ensures a fair chance for all artists, both new and returning, to be judged solely on their work.
Jurors look for many things in the art they review: substance, unity of style, content, originality, technique and the “it” factor. One juror commented, “I love when you get that immediate feeling that ‘someone’s home’—when you get that deep sense of who the artist is by looking at the work; who the human being behind it is.”
The jury was very impressed with the 2013 pool of applicants. “The Sausalito Art Festival has a well-deserved reputation for artists with originality and showing a lot of different kinds of work—more than you typically see at many other festivals,” said one juror who exhibits across the country and has experienced many festivals from the inside. “It’s exciting to see great work, but when you have many booths of great work side by side throughout the Festival it takes the whole experience to another level and makes it an event, not just another art show—Sausalito is an event!” said another juror.
Artists selected for the 2013 will be announced later in the spring.
